So why dont we know how many types of bacteria are there on the planet? Why is it so difficult to define a species? What are our current methods of defining microbial species? What are the drawbacks of these methods that help explain the fire part of this question? We talked about mutations genetic drift and selection and their effects on speciation but what is the other thing microbes do naturally all the time that really complicates how we define them as a separate individual species?
