Description/Instructions: Each team of students will develop a power point online presentation on the health-related beliefs and practices of a selected cultural group. You are encouraged to choose a group that you encounter in your school setting and/or that your group has a genuine interest in learning more about. However, it is recommended that the group chooses a cultural group that they are not very familiar with. Student groups will be developing an online power point presentation that is accompanied by a written narrative/speaker notes to post for class members. Discussion questions will also be developed and facilitated by the group.

Guidelines:
Each team of students will develop a power point online presentation on the health values, beliefs and practices of a cultural group in the culture of choice. Groups are encouraged to choose a culture that your group has genuine interest in learning more about.
The power point should include approximately 20 slides including two discussion questions at the end for class members to respond to. It is the responsibility of all the group members to participate in facilitating a discussion.
The presentation should include, but it is not limited to, the following points:
Introduction to the presentation (title, name of presenters, brief narrative about purpose of presentation).
Statistical data about the group locally, nationally, and internationally (i.e. population statistics, etc.)
Summary of the history of the cultural group chosen, including:
When and why the cultural group immigrate to the US
Summary data on traditional cultural value impacting health such as:
Definition of health (i.e. what does it mean to be healthy?)
Beliefs about the cause(s) for illness
Role of the family
Gender roles
Religious beliefs and impact on health
Cultural healers that are used alone or in combination with medicine such as herbalists, spiritualists, etc.
The person(s) in a family responsible for various health-related decisions, (what to do when ill, where to go, who to see, and what advice to follow).
Culturally-based health practices (i.e. special diet or herbs, massage, acupuncture, and/or use of Western medicine).
Beliefs concerning body organs and/or systems and how they function
Health topics that may be sensitive or taboo to the client.
Beliefs and practices toward visiting doctors, immunizations, screening tests, preventive health measures, etc.

Beliefs and practices during specific types of situations (pregnancy and childbirth, mental illness, terminal illness, illness of a child, death, etc.)
Possible conflicts between health beliefs and practices and the teaching and practices of an established health program or system.
Recommendations for culturally appropriate/competent care (in other words, specific nursing actions/interventions) such as:
How would a nurse communicate with this patient (verbally and nonverbally) if you are taking care of him/her? Give an example.
What specific/special cultural health practices would you incorporate in your care (i.e. special diet, other alternative healing practices, etc.). Give examples.
How would you include the family and be sensitive to their cultural issues and needs? Give an example.
