Objective: This assignment examines the management of an individual project and as such will draw upon the skills, concepts and models we have discussed in the course . (i.e.: triple constrains model for Project management time,cost and scope; stakeholder analysis) to apply them in a real-world setting. The exercise is designed to illustrate the practical challenges involved in managing the project, including an evaluation of hot spots (problem areas in the project) and beauty spots (areas of good practice) in the project. The analysis of the project should make use of models, concepts and frameworks from the course lectures and your wider reading. The assignment should assess the strategic importance of the project to the firm or group of firms involved. Referring to project and company background information from personal experience and/or secondary sources, the assignment should reveal interesting project events, people and management challenges. Project selection: Select a project where you can collect and analyze sufficient secondary (and/or primary) data to derive meaningful and strong recommendations. The project may be managed by one or a group of organizations in the public and/or private sector. This is not a typical research project but an experiential learning project; sources may be from your selected organizations website, your knowledge of the project, government and consultancy reports as well as journal articles. When analyzing your chosen project, consider issues such as, but not limited to: Project objective and scope Project life-cycle Organization of the project Core capabilities of organizations involved How were risks and contracts managed? Why was the project a success or failure? Identify hot spots (problem areas) and beauty spots (good practice) Identify solutions for how problems can be overcome in future projects Should any lessons learnt be transferred to other projects? Your report needs to be well-structured, divided into numbered sections that correspond logically to your chosen structure and presentation. You should include an overall introduction and conclusion. Use additional introductions to explain the purpose and structure of each section, and write a short concluding paragraph in each major section. The report should focus on 1-2 key project management issue(s) (e.g. risk management, stakeholder management, project learning, project control, project planning, etc) which you should select after careful investigation. Please underline your investigation of secondary project data (e.g. company reports, government reports, project case studies etc.) with appropriate academic references to strengthen your argument. An essential feature of the report is to illustrate how theoretical constructs or models can help to explain the actions of organisations, project managers etc. in practice. You are therefore advised to read widely. Must reference at least 15 discrete references. Very Important: The word limit includes the main text (including in-text references, tables and figures) but not the list of references at the end of your proposal. The main text starts with the first word in the introduction/background section and ends at the last word in your conclusion section. The word limit does not include the title, abstract, table of contents, reference list and appendices (I do not expect a long list of apndices ). Sticking to a strict word limit is difficult and an important skill for you to acquire, so make sure that you write in a concise and focused manner.
