Instructions below Education in the Media Guidelines While the weekly readings represent a small sample of current thinking and research on the selected topics, there are many events impacting education that occur on a daily basis. As with any textbook, it is important to see how that information intersects with reality; subsequently, you will develop topics that explore what is trending in the media related to issues impacting the classroom. The focus should be on local, state, national, or even international, economic, political, or social factors impacting peoples (and your) thinking about education in the context of classrooms in urban settings. This information can be found in newspapers, blogs, social media, magazines, and so forth, but it should be in a form that is accessible for everyone to view the background material. The general format for the assignment is in two parts: 1) a summary that highlights significant areas (e.g., topics, issues, practices, legislation, perspectives, etc.); and, 2) a discussion that makes a clear connection to a) the relationship of the media to best practice and/or current theory, and b) a statement of your perspective regarding the media viewpoint(s). The project should refer to a minimum of 10 sources, and should be approximately 350 – 500 words; active links to the media source should be placed at the beginning of the post. The education in the media projects will be posted in the appropriate discussion thread, and may be uploaded as a word document, pdf file, or PowerPoint.
