MGMT 4331 Team Assignment – Employment Case Brief Your team is to select a US Supreme Court employment law decision from 2000 to present and prepare a brief of that case using the Blatt Student Brief Format described in the article. Note that you must also add a section at the end of your brief describing the significance of the case, including at least four law review or academic sources. Make sure you delegate a team member to submit the brief and then slides after the class presentation to your professor. Additional Details: Employment law in the United States is shaped by the US Congress, but also by the US Supreme Court that interprets the various laws passed by Congress. This has had a major impact on the interpretation of the law by management. Pick a case regarding an important employment issue decided by the US Supreme Court between 2000 and today. Make sure you fully understand the case before you start writing. Really recent cases are unlikely to have much good academic material available to guide your analysis, so you may want to focus on cases that are at least two years old. Your paper should follow the brief format provided to you in the Blatt article in Course Documents. Use the first brief format discussed in detail starting on page 21. Law review articles and scholarly legal publications usually contain extensive articles discussing the impact of various Supreme Court cases. Note, this is to be your team members own work. You may not cut and paste from a published brief on your case. If you cut and paste from an article or use extensive quotes from the case, instead of providing your own analysis, you will reduce your credit for the paper, perhaps substantially. If you use other material without providing proper citations, this is plagiarism and you will receive a zero for the assignment. The case brief should be four to five pages of double-spaced text in length, not counting cover page or references. Selection of Topic: (up to 5% of Final Grade) Some extra credit for more unique, less publicized, subjects for each assignment topic. On the other hand, if the topic does not fit the assignment, the grade will be substantially lowered. Analysis of the Background: (25% of Final Grade) A thoroughly researched analysis of the subjects background for each assignment is expected. Formal Analysis of the Papers Subject: (40% of Final Grade) This is the meat of your teams paper and this should get to the point of the paper in clean business language and present the position and observations of your team on the selected subject. Brevity is appreciated and it is especially important to avoid fluff or extraneous material. Sources and APA 6 Compliance: (20% of Final Grade) APA 6 compliance, especially for in-text cites and the references list at the end, is required. It is optional to follow APA 6 for formatting the paper, but poorly formatted papers will lose points. At least two solid sources on average per assigned page, not including the course textbook or other textbooks, is expected. At least half of the sources must be primary sources or peer-reviewed academic publications. There will be a major reduction in score if students fail to do this or use junk sources. Technical Features: (10% of Final Grade) The paper must meet the length requirements for each assignment. No penalty for running a little long, but students can be docked for poor business writing, which is often wordy. Focus on short sentences and decisive management style writing. Running a little long is not penalized, but running long due to flowery, wandering language will cost major points.
